Academics

The Social Studies Department seeks to enhance students’ understanding of historical events and contemporary

issues in a manner that reflects Christian values and

democratic principles. The department offers a variety of courses that prepare students to assess long term consequences of historical events, analyze social issues and synthesize data to create realistic solutions to present-day problems. The development of these skills will enable students to become effective participants in community, state, and national affairs. To further develop the students’ skills, the Social Studies Department offers four Advanced Placement courses: AP European History, AP United States History, AP United States Government and AP Comparative Government.  The AP Program is an opportunity for students to pursue college-level studies while still in high school and receive advanced placement or credit in college.

Students who take AP courses learn a subject in depth, develop analytical reasoning skills, and form disciplined study habits that can contribute to continued success at the college level. While focused on academics, ILS’s Social Studies Department also offers extra-curricular activities.

CLOSE-UP is an exciting week long study visit to the nation’s capital, where students have the opportunity to experience our government and political process firsthand.

Social Studies

Students meet the people who drive the nation’s most important issues, witness our democratic process in action during legislative debates, and visit historical sites. In the end, they realize that democracy is not a spectator sport. Students who have demonstrated excellence in history and the social studies can be invited to apply for Rho Kappa: the National Social Studies Honor Society. The aim of the society is to promote historical awareness, intellectual growth, and social welfare. ILS’s Dorothy Day Chapter is dedicated to the idea thatknowledge without service is incomplete. Throughout the year, students organize service projects using their talents in the social sciences to identify, analyze, and come up with solutions for challenges within their communities. Students are eligible for membership their junior and senior years.
