Academics

An honor society is an organization that recognizes excellence among peers who have an avid or passionate interest in the discipline focus of the society. Societies invite students who meet grade and course requirements to go through an application process to see if they qualify for membership in accordance with other requirements the society mandates.

Societies are social groups that require active participation from their members to fulfill their missions. It is important to understand then that membership in honor societies are not awards or distinctions to collect. Accepting membership in an honor society means agreeing to spend personal time participating in the extra-curricular activities the society runs. Many societies require members to run tutoring labs and service projects, organize cultural events, and participate in local, state, and national competitions for their discipline of study. Candidates should consider their academic schedules, their obligations to other clubs and organizations, their familial and personal obligations, and all other aspects of their lives to accept memberships they can responsibly fulfill while maintaining a healthy and balanced life.

Students are encouraged to know the criteria for honor societies in the subject areas they are most passionate about and strive to meet those criteria. When choosing which honor societies to strive for, we encourage students to consider their interests in honor societies to be something like considering their interests for their college majors and minors.
